Synopsis:

A TRAGICOMEDY IN TWO ACTS. ONE TRAGIC AND ONE COMIC.

‘’We are the latest grandchildren. We are sperm. We are old. Not just old; we are ancient. A fart. We are Soviet dictators. We are the 7 Wonders. We are innumerable graves. We are the keepers’’, A shouted in a dramatic tone.

‘’We are the throwers. We are cleaning brooms. We are brothers. Big Brothers .We are Ulysses. We possess nothing and thus not fear its loss. We need not destroy the past; it is gone’’, B shouted in an even more dramatic tone.

WE ARE MOVING THEATRES. NON-SENSE. PURE MAGIC.
We claim territories and we invade spaces. WE ARE MOTHERS. WE ARE MOTHER FUCKERS.
WE ARE THE MOST PURE, FUNNY, ABSURD, ANCIENT, and TRAGIC TRAGEDY

Project Description:

This performance piece is the second project on which Athi & Mafalda work together as a company. The creation of the piece is mainly based on the act of CARRYING and RELOCATION, or rather the idea of claiming/invading TERRITORIES. What do we carry within us when we relocate ourselves in space? How do we establish our own new territory?

As territories are being outlined through the “space”, the belongingness fades and the boundaries tremble when intermission, interruption and invasion start to create conflict, contradictions and tensions between the two creatures.

Through this project, they intend to explore the idea of themselves being storage containers. Using spherical costumes, they will introduce two creatures on stage - reminiscent of mythological creatures like Atlas, spaceships, planets or even some sort of animals like turtles or snails, which always carry their homes with/on them. But what do these creatures have to reveal on stage? ‘’THE OBJECTS AS THE KEEPERS’’.

By setting an unexpected and absurd environment, they play between the realm of theatre, reality and magic, not really knowing if it is theatre or if it is magic. They would say: always both.

About The Artists:

Anthi Kougia is a greek artist. Her practice is based on an effort to understand the reasons behind the cruel socio-political surrealism around her, by using absurdity, humour and tragedy. She is interested in a ‘’ theatre of capacity” and thus, interested in creating a ‘’popular language’’ based on ordinary familiar objects. By placing the object in the centre of her performance practice she tries to explore its transformative power in order to reach unexpected territories and dimensions. In September 2016, Anthi finished her MA in Performance Making by the Goldsmiths University of London.

Mafalda Miranda Jacinto is an artist based in Lisbon and London. As a visually oriented creator, she enjoys creating a fantasy world on stage through a variety of media, by using moving images to explore the surreal in reality. Like Anthi, Mafalda attended a one-year MA program in Performance Making, at Goldsmiths University of London. She is also member of the artistic collective Rabbit Hole, since December 2013 and she has also worked for two years as a producer with the dance collective Bomba Suicida.
