On Saturday 16th September join us for an afternoon of Enamel Jewellery making. Led by expert craftspeople, Zoey and Ray, you will be introduced to the history and significance of enamel jewellery and be taught the techniques and processes to make your own piece of jewellery to take home. 

The Enamel Jewellery Workshop is designed to introduce participants to the beautiful art of enamel jewellery making. Throughout the workshop, participants will learn the techniques and processes involved in creating unique and vibrant enamel jewellery pieces.

This workshop is part of our Creative Elephant program for London Design Festival and Urban Elephant Festival.

Please see below for a breakdown of the sessions, including what you will learn, the tools, techniques and materials you will use, culminating in a final enamel jewellery piece you will get to take home.

Introduction:

  • Brief history and significance of enamel jewellery.

  • Definitions of enamel and its practical applications.

  • Overview of different enamel techniques, styles, such as cloisonné, plique-à-jour.

  • Process of making.

  • Previous works done by other participants.

Materials and Tools:

  • Fine silver blanks, accessories, file, cutters, enamel colour palettes, colour lead, paper and pencil, sandpaper, polishing compound bar.

Making:

  • Choose blanks from 40 different types of designs.

  • Filing the blank

  • Design and sketch

One-on-one guidance:

  • Demonstration of applying enamel powder. Guidance on colour blending, layering, and achieving desired effects.

  • Exploring design concepts and creating unique enamel jewellery pieces

  • Assistance in the creation of individual enamel jewellery projects, with personalized guidance from experienced instructors.

Finishing and polishing:

  • Finishing techniques to enhance the appearance and durability of enamel jewellery.

  • Demonstrations on polishing, cleaning, and adding final touches to the completed pieces.

About the workshop leaders: 

Zoey Filigree 

To appreciate and enhance the value of Chinese traditional crafts & fine jewellery, we aim to bring its authentication and delicacy into the process of making with creativity. Zoey Filigree develops a variety of workshops to spread the specialised skills to the local community and narrow the distance between royal craftsmanship culture and contemporary jewellery practice.

Credited as a professional jewellery designer, and founder of the studio, Zoey is dedicated to traditional jewellery crafts such as filigree inlay and emerald enamel. Her works were curated by London Craft Week and London Design Festival.

Ray Zheng

Jeweller and researcher based in London, born in 1997 in Urumqi, China. Completed BA at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology of Jewelry Design and came to Goldsmiths, University of London in 2019. She understands jewellery as a formulating object for body/individual expression that questions value, obsessions, needs and survival. She gets gravitated by design methods like sensing, storytelling, and the use of actions, and materials to comport matters moving towards social politics, culture and traditions, looking for more possibilities through thinking and making.

About Creative Elephant: 

Hotel Elephant is pleased to present Creative Elephant, a program of events and workshops celebrating the creative and design talents of our studio members for the London Design Festival and Urban Elephant Festival. The program will include a group exhibition of artwork and objects from our members, including textiles, fashion, fine art and jewellery. The exhibition is free to attend and will run for the duration of the festival. Our events program will include participatory workshops and demonstrations from different craftspeople, alongside an evening talk about Chinese Filigree for the Southwark Design District lates program.
