On the evening of the 21st of September we will be hosting a talk; “The Secret Craft: Chinese Filigree Inlay'' delivered by the Zoey Filigree team. This talk will introduce the audience to the traditional craft of filigree jewellery and its cultural significance in Chinese heritage. The evening will include an interactive demonstration where visitors can try their hand at the wire stretching technique. This event is part of Southwark Design Districts lates, for the London Design Festival and part of Hotel Elephant's Creative Elephant, program.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm, giving visitors the chance to view our current exhibition and grab a drink from the bar. The talk will run 7 pm - 8:30 pm, with extra time after the event to view the exhibition. The event will finish at 9 pm.
Event description from Zoey Filigree:
Our studio focuses on the intricate art of Chinese filigree, a refined and ancient technique that involves skillfully embedding fine wires into jewellery to create intricate and elaborate effects. It holds significant cultural heritage value in China. However, with the proliferation of globalization and industrialization, traditional handcrafts like filigree are in urgent need of rejuvenation. In addition to court filigree craftsmanship, we also explore other handcraft techniques such as enamel, coiling, and metalwork, incorporating them into contemporary jewellery practices. Our aim is to bring this traditional craft to local communities and bridge the gap between Chinese craft culture and modern jewellery design. We strive to uphold the tradition of handcrafting and create a contemporary version of this art form.

The Filigree Inlay Lecture aims to introduce participants to the intricate and exquisite art of filigree inlay. It will provide a hands-on experience for participants to understand the techniques and processes involved in creating stunning filigree inlay jewellery pieces. The talk will cover the following key areas:
Brief history and significance of filigree inlay jewellery.
Definition of filigree inlay and its practical applications.
Overview of different filigree inlay techniques, styles, and cultural influences.
Demonstration of wire drawing and filigree forming, invite participants to have a try.

About Creative Elephant:
Hotel Elephant is pleased to present Creative Elephant, a program of events and workshops celebrating the creative and design talents of our studio members for the London Design Festival and Urban Elephant Festival. The program will include a group exhibition of artwork and objects from our members, including textiles, fashion, fine art and jewellery. The exhibition is free to attend and will run for the duration of the festival. Our events program will include participatory workshops and demonstrations from different craftspeople, alongside an evening talk about Chinese Filigree for the Southwark Design District lates program.
